Hi! I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 18 years of experience providing counseling to adolescents and adults. At the end of 2021, I opened Koen Counseling and Wellness Center in response to the growing need for accessible mental health services and long waitlists for therapy. My goal has always been to create a safe, supportive space for healing.
My clinical focus includes working with individuals facing trauma, substance use, anxiety, and depression. I am trained in both EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Brainspotting, which are highly effective approaches for trauma treatment and emotional regulation.
I obtained my Doctor of Social Work (DSW) from Barry University in August 2024. Through this advanced training, I’ve deepened my understanding of how the brain and body respond to stress and trauma—knowledge I actively integrate into my therapeutic approach.
Above all, I am passionate about walking alongside my clients as they do the hard work of healing. Therapy isn't easy—it takes courage to show up and face your pain—but it’s also powerful, life-changing work. And I’m honored to be part of that process.

My name is Jason and I am thrilled to be joining the Koen CWC family. I graduated with my masters in May 2024 and obtained my LPC in August 2024. I am interested in working with clients who have suffered trauma, and especially with first responders. I bring with me over 17 years of law enforcement experience, including one year working at a state-run juvenile prison. During my time as a police officer I have been involved in numerous things, including creating a therapy k-9 unit, the team coordinator for a county hostage/crisis negotiations team, a crash reconstructionist, a member of peer support teams, trained by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation in individual and group debriefings, and even an instructor in schools on mental health.
I have been married to my wife Alexis for over 13 years and have a four-legged son named Gary. We are originally from the Chicagoland area, but moved to southern Illinois in 2018 to get away from the hustle and bustle that the north offered.
Again, I am excited to join this team and to work and learn alongside everyone. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.

Hi! I’m Deanna Charles, a Licensed Social Worker, and I’m so glad you’re here. This is the first step towards becoming a happier, healthier YOU, and that’s a big deal!
In 2020, I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Social Work from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Since then, I’ve worked as a school social worker, supporting both general and special education students with behavioral and emotional difficulties like ADHD, anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Through my work with children and adolescents, I’ve facilitated with setting goals, identifying emotions, developing positive coping and social skills, improving relationships, and building positive and sustainable self-esteem. I often incorporate games, fidgets, or crafts into sessions, as learning through play goes beyond just learning—it’s about connecting, practicing, and understanding new things in a way that’s relevant. This approach is not only developmentally appropriate but also proven to stimulate brain development and make meaningful changes.
My approach is always client-centered and trauma-informed, ensuring a comfortable and empathetic environment. I believe that with the right support and encouragement, everyone has the potential to lead a fulfilling and satisfying life. In our sessions, I will incorporate a mix of therapeutic techniques including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing. In addition to my existing experience, I am committed to expanding my knowledge by exploring new strategies to help guide you toward healing.

While I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents, I’m also passionate about supporting teens, young adults, and early adults on their journey toward healing and personal growth. I truly believe that psychoeducation—understanding the “why” behind behaviors and thought patterns—can unlock powerful healing and transformation.

If you’re ready to take the next step in improving your mental health and creating a more fulfilling life, I can help! I am currently accepting in-person and telehealth clients!

I was born and raised in Illinois and moved to Southern Illinois in 2014 to attend college. I earned both my Bachelor of Psychology and Bachelor of Social Work from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, with a focus on mental health and mental health disorders. I went on to complete my Master of Social Work at SIUC, where I was selected for the Trauma-Informed Care Fellowship. This fellowship deepened my understanding of how trauma impacts individuals, families, and communities.

Over the course of my career, I have gained experience in a variety of areas, including individual therapy, substance use disorders, community resource coordination, parenting education, and more. These opportunities have given me a well-rounded perspective on the many ways social work can support growth and healing.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in a client-centered philosophy. I believe therapy should begin with meeting clients where they are and understanding their unique needs and goals. From there, I tailor the type of therapy and interventions to support each individual in their journey toward growth and well-being.
